CONTEMPORARY ASSIMILATION Engin Erkiner

Like all concepts, assimilation changes in content over time. The word remains the same, the content changes. Additionally, there are different types of assimilation.

Full assimilation is the complete assimilation of the immigrant into the new society. For this, several generations are required and the similarities between the immigrant and the immigrant society accelerate assimilation. For example, having the same religious belief…

Religion is an important component of mass culture and therefore Muslims' western /span>it is mentioned that it is incompatible with their society. After years of wrong practices in this regard, a new understanding of assimilation was adopted and mosques became visible. Islam is now also a part of western societies, but this Islam is different from the Islam of other countries.

It is possible to see this clearly in Alevis. .

The Alevism of those living in small villages in rural areas is different from the Alevism of big cities. Those who have lived in a big city for a long time are inevitably affected by the understanding of this place. For example, old solidarityism disappears.

It is possible to see this influence in Kurds as well.

Gezi resistance was initially viewed with suspicion was met, and it was thought that it was created artificially to undermine the solution process. Disregarding this understanding, Kurds in Istanbul participated in Gezi and doubts about Gezi disappeared in a short time. It is not possible to live with another people for at least 30 years and not be influenced by them.

1990s The main criticism directed at Yazın magazine in the early years was that Turkish had no future in Germany. Therefore, this magazine would necessarily disappear and no one would even remember it.

The first generation became introverted and became Turks. The second generation grew up not knowing where they belonged. The third generation and those following would be Germans.

With the communication revolution, a different development emerged, satellite televisions entered homes and In the fourth generation, German-speaking Turkish nationalists emerged. It is a kind of assimilation that took place here, too.

German pushed Turkish back, but could not eliminate the Turkish nationalism that existed in the past. In the past, there was a uniform assimilation, and its basis was the breaking of relations with the previous society. Contemporary assimilation has multiple components. The relationship with the previous society is not interrupted, the values of the old and the new society are mixed in different proportions.

In all cases, assimilation It is not possible to be completely excluded and not to be affected by the values of one's new environment. Unlike before, this influence is very fragmented. The values of the new society do not largely destroy the old, they integrate with it at different levels.

Assimilation used to be uniform. . Contemporary assimilation is very diverse.
