REFUGEE FLIGHT TO SWITZERLAND Engin Erkiner
REFUGEE INFLUENCY TO SWITZERLANDEngin Erkiner
1985-1995 Many Turks and Kurds applied for asylum in Switzerland. The two most important countries for asylum applications in European countries were France and Germany. Those whose asylum applications were not accepted in Germany went to France, sought asylum and came to Germany with a refugee passport.
There were a small number of Turks and Kurds who came to Switzerland as workers years ago. When many people had to leave the country after September 12, 1980, Switzerland was not among the preferred countries. In addition to Tezer Özlü, one of the well-known writers, Tektaş Ağaoğlu was also in this country. I don't know any other well-known names.
The significant difference between those who came to Switzerland in these years and those who came to Germany and France among them there were many sympathizers and even people uninterested in the political struggle. The Swiss administration easily accepted asylum applications. After the first arrivals, other people usually came from the same region. Adıyaman can be given as an example in this regard.
I asked a few of those who came: “Approximately 10,000 DM money to human traffickers
You gave span> You could easily open a business in the country with this money.
Why did you choose to come here?”< /span>
These people could be called revolutionary sympathizers. Most of them were not wanted in the country. They replied, "This country is going to a bad place, let's go while we have the opportunity." People who were further behind would prepare court statements according to which organization's name they would apply for asylum using. Questions were being asked about that organization in court, and many people who applied for asylum did not know anything about the organization they claimed to be members of. For this reason, publications that gave short and important information about the organization were sold very well.
If the market is like this, why shouldn't we take advantage of it? We printed the party calendar. The calendar briefly included the party's founding information, the people who lost their lives, and its main views. As we expected, the calendar sold well. People were memorizing that information and answering the questions in court.
Meanwhile, funny events were also happening. Let's give an example to better understand the situation of some people who apply for asylum. In the court, the judge asks the person who applies for asylum to check their general political knowledge:< /span>
What kind of person is Pinochet?
The main reason why so many asylum applications were easily accepted was that Switzerland needed people to work in the service sector. There was a need for many people to work in restaurants, food sales and similar jobs.
Switzerland needed unskilled workers. As the need for asylum decreased, it would become more difficult to seek asylum. It should also be noted that those who were accepted for asylum in this period were immediately given houses and goods.necessary.
That time was different. Now almost none of these opportunities are available.
