NUMBER OF REFUGEES AND RATE OF REFUGEES Engin Erkiner

According to the 2024 World Migration Report published by the United Nations International Organization for Migration Turkey again ranks first among the countries hosting the most refugees.

Turkey has been in the first place since 2017 It is the country hosting the most refugees for the seventh consecutive time. According to the 2022 report, there are approximately 3 million 600 thousand refugees in Turkey, especially Syrians.

The assessment made by the relevant unit of the UN contains significant shortcomings. In addition to how many refugees there are in a country, the ratio of this number to the country's population should also be taken into account. If the number of refugees in a large country is the same as the number of refugees in a small country, there can be no equality.

Lebanon It is a small country with a population of 5.5 million. The exact number of Syrian refugees in this country is unknown, but is estimated to be between half and one million. In this case, Lebanon is the country that hosts the highest number of refugees compared to its population. They are turned back at the border.

Even if we do not take into account that refugees in Turkey are not refugees – we do not have a refugee law. - It is not right to make an evaluation only by taking the absolute number into account.

In which population do these many refugees live? This should also be taken into consideration. Consider that the number of refugees in Turkey is higher than in China with a population of 1.6 billion or in India with a population of 1.1 billion. These people almost disappear in those countries.

If the number of refugees in China, which has a population twenty times that of Turkey, reaches a figure of 72 million, Only then would it host the same amount of refugees as Turkey. It is not right to consider only the number of refugees.
