NEW IMMIGRANTS NEW JOBS Engin Erkiner
About eight years ago, Germany accepted approximately one million immigrants, mostly Syrian, within a few months. After the short German course, some of them were placed in low-paid jobs that were open, while new jobs emerged for the remaining number.
New barber shops started to open in many cities. I asked my regular barber why. New barber shops had Barbershop written on them. A certificate of mastery has long been required to open a barbershop. This document may have been received from Turkey, but if Germany did not find this sufficient, it may have deemed short or long-term retraining necessary.
Such a document is not mandatory for those who open a barbershop. My barber didn't know, but certain things are definitely required, but it seems that less is required than before.
A significant portion of the new barbers are Syrians.
Some of these shops opened in large numbers in a short time. It will close after a while because it cannot find enough customers. Their prices are not cheap either, they are like the normal price in the market. Its customers will primarily be Syrians.
In the 1960s, workers came to Germany from Turkey under contract. Shortly after /span>started, Turkish grocery stores opened. These grocery stores sold foods specific to Turkey that were not available in Germany but were persistently sought after by new immigrant workers.
Each new immigrant flow creates its own market.
Large numbers of Poles in Germanythere would be fewer people shopping in shops selling Polish drinks, sweets and food. Another new job is to take food home from a restaurant. He is also looking for a company that has been established and works with bicycle couriers. The courier picks up the food and takes it home, collecting both the food money and the transportation fee.
Ten years ago in Germany There was no such job. This can also be called an “invented business”.
There are different companies in this field, and there is also separation among them. While some companies' couriers use motorized bicycles, some use slower normal bicycles. The new area suddenly fills with companies and their employees and fierce competition begins. All food couriers have smartphones and orders are made via them. There is definitely a central system that knows which courier is where. The new order will automatically be given to the nearest courier
Those who argue that artificial intelligence will destroy workers' workplaces forget the feature of capitalism to produce new jobs. While the scope of some jobs is shrinking, new job areas that were not considered before may emerge. The majority of these are for low-wage workers and are populated primarily by immigrants.
