CARD INSTEAD OF MONEY Engin Erkiner
A new application for asylum seekers has started in Germany; Cash is not given, they shop using the credit on the card given to them. Since the equivalent of the cash money is on the card, that is, there is no decrease in the state's payment, what is the purpose of this application?
The purpose is to ensure that the refugees themselves It is preventing them from saving some of the money given to them and sending it back to their country, which is just enough to live on.
There are two reasons for this restriction.
First; This practice aims to reduce the asylum influx. No matter how small the payment is, one can save, say, 20 Euros. The equivalent of this money, which has little meaning in Germany, is 660 TL in Turkey and more in some countries. It is a contribution, even if small, to the family or relatives left behind. It is thought that if this contribution cannot be made, the asylum influx will decrease.
Second; Although the first is clearly stated, the second is not mentioned. States that provide asylum aid and social assistance want this money to be spent within the country. While this money has a social aid feature, it also ensures that demand within the country is kept alive.
I don't think giving a payment card instead of cash – I haven't seen the card but it probably has a chip and the relevant amount is replenished, let's say once a week – would result in a significant reduction in the number of asylum seekers .
