Engin Erkiner Wrote FEARING EUROPE…
FEAR OF EUROPE...
People of the Turkish left, especially the people I know, had an intense fear of Europe in the early 1980s. This understanding was especially seen in people who had to go to Syria and Lebanon after September 12, 1980. Europe was also outside the country, Syria and Lebanon were also outside the country, but the latter was not thought to have the same feature. The decisive factor here was the stay in the camps of the Palestinian organizations and the armed vigil against Israel, even though there was no heavy attack until 1982.
Palestinian organizations showed great solidarity with the Turkish revolutionary movement. It was an important problem for thousands of people to have a place to stay. Both of these problems were being resolved for the revolutionaries who remained in the Palestinian camps. In addition, a certain fee was given to those who stayed.
It is an understandable feeling to leave Syria-Lebanon and go to Europe under these conditions. The concept of "man rots in Europe" was the main expression of this negation.
As a result of Israel's great attack in 1982, Palestinian camps had to be evacuated. There was no point in staying in Syria because there was no mass in which to work. Here, people were useless.
It was possible to see a significant number of friends with the understanding of "Europe rots" in Paris a year later. The reason why Paris was chosen was that asylum was easy.
The negative image of coming to European countries changed significantly in the following years. The determining factor in this change was the continuous increase in the number of visitors. Syrians, Afghans and those coming from Turkey make up the first three places among asylum seekers in Germany.
It can be said that voluntary migration has been added to these in the last few years. Many doctors came to Germany and still do. Companies that act as intermediaries for this work have been established in different cities of the country. They are researching which hospital and under which conditions a job can be found. Naturally, they also get their hefty commissions.
I'll leave it to the next post since it's a bit of a long topic.
